How to create a new family

In KiddyCash, a family is the central container that holds everything together — your children’s wallets, shared settings, allowance rules, and transaction history. Before you can add a child, set up an allowance, or track spending, you need to create a family first. Think of it as opening a household account that the whole family shares.

This guide walks you through creating your first family from scratch.

Before you start

Make sure you have:

  • A verified KiddyCash parent account (KYC-verified with your national ID or passport)
  • Your basic details ready — your family name, country, and preferred currency (for example, KES if you are based in Nairobi or anywhere else in Kenya)

If your account is not yet verified, complete identity verification under Profile → Verify Identity before continuing.

Steps to create a new family

  1. Open the KiddyCash app and log in to your parent account.

  2. Navigate to the family creation page. You can go directly by visiting https://kiddy.cash/family/create in your browser, or tap Families in the bottom navigation bar and then tap the + Create Family button.

  3. Enter your family name. This is simply a label — for example, The Okonkwo Family or Kamau Household. Your children will see this name on their wallets, so choose something familiar and friendly.

  4. Select your country and currency. Choose the country where your family is based. KiddyCash supports local currencies across Africa, including KES (Kenyan Shilling), NGN (Nigerian Naira), GHS (Ghanaian Cedi), and others. This setting affects how balances and allowances are displayed throughout the app.

  5. Choose your family’s financial philosophy (optional). KiddyCash lets you decide upfront whether children in your family can borrow against future allowances. This is called a family loan — a short-term advance a parent can approve so a child learns to manage credit responsibly. If you want to explore this feature later, you can read about why teaching kids about loans creates better financial adults and how family loans work as a financial education tool. You can always update this setting after setup.

  6. Review and confirm. Check that the family name and currency are correct, then tap Create Family.

  7. You’re done. KiddyCash will create your family container and take you to the Family Overview page, where you can start adding children, setting allowances, and managing shared settings.

What happens next

Once your family is created, it appears as a card on your dashboard. From there you can:

  • Add children and assign them individual wallets
  • Configure allowance schedules and amounts
  • Enable or disable features like businesses and badges for your kids

To learn your way around the dashboard, see how to open the Family Overview page. If you need to change your family name, currency, or loan settings later, follow the steps in how to update family details.

Common questions

Can I create more than one family? Yes. A single parent account can manage multiple families — useful if you are a guardian for children in different households.

Can I change the currency later? Currency can be updated, but historical transactions will remain in the original currency. It is best to set the right currency from the start.
