How to edit an existing allowance schedule
Life changes — a new school term, a shift in household budget, or a child taking on more responsibilities at home in Nairobi or Kampala. When the original allowance plan no longer fits, you can adjust the amount or timing directly in KiddyCash without cancelling and recreating from scratch.
Before you edit
Edits take effect on the next scheduled disbursement. Any allowance already queued or paid in the current cycle will not be affected retroactively. If you need to make an immediate one-off top-up alongside the edit, do that separately from your child’s wallet screen first.
Also worth noting: if your child’s school is running a financial literacy programme through KiddyCash, allowance timing sometimes ties into classroom savings goals. It’s worth a quick conversation before you change the cadence — research on how schools and families can collaborate on financial education shows that consistency between home and school reinforces good money habits.
Steps to edit an allowance
-
Open the allowance detail screen. Navigate directly to:
https://kiddy.cash/family/kiddy/account/allowance/:allowance_idReplace:allowance_idwith the actual ID shown in your allowances list. You can also reach this screen by tapping Family → [Child’s name] → Allowances and selecting the active schedule. -
Tap the Edit (pencil) icon in the top-right corner of the allowance card. This opens the edit form with the current values pre-filled.
-
Adjust the amount. Enter the new figure in KES (or whichever currency your family wallet is set to). If you’re funding allowances via M-Pesa, confirm your wallet balance covers the updated amount before saving — KiddyCash will attempt to disburse from the linked wallet on the next cycle date.
-
Change the frequency if needed. You can switch between weekly and monthly schedules here. If you’re moving from weekly to monthly and want a refresher on how monthly allowances are structured, the guide on how to create a monthly allowance for a child covers the disbursement logic in detail. Likewise, how to create a weekly allowance for a child is useful if you’re going the other direction.
-
Update the start date of the new cycle (optional). If you want the edited schedule to kick in on a specific date rather than the next natural recurrence, toggle Custom next disbursement date and pick a date. Leave this off if you’re happy with the existing cycle rolling forward.
-
Add or update a label. Labels like “School term allowance” or “Chores bonus” help older children understand the purpose of each payment — a small but meaningful detail, especially as you build the kind of financial dialogue that schools and parents working together recommend.
-
Tap Save. KiddyCash will display a confirmation showing the next disbursement date and amount. Review this carefully before closing.
Common issues
- Save button greyed out: Check that no required field is empty and that the amount is above the minimum threshold (KES 10 or equivalent).
- Allowance still showing old amount: Pull to refresh on the allowances list. Edits occasionally take a few seconds to propagate.
- Frequency change not reflected: Switching frequency resets the cycle clock. The first disbursement under the new frequency may arrive sooner or later than expected — check the confirmed next disbursement date on the summary screen.
