How to edit a child savings goal
Goals shift — a birthday comes sooner than expected, your child gets excited about a bigger item, or the KES amount you originally set no longer matches what something actually costs. Editing a goal mid-way lets you stay realistic without scrapping the progress already made.
Before you edit, it helps to have a clear picture of where the goal currently stands. If you need a refresher on reading the progress breakdown, check how to view a child savings goal — particularly the contribution history, which tells you whether the goal is on track or already slipping.
When editing makes sense
Editing is the right move when:
- The target amount has changed (e.g., the item now costs KES 4,500 instead of KES 3,000)
- The deadline needs to move — either pulled forward because motivation is high, or pushed back to reduce pressure
- You’ve revised the family’s allowance schedule and the weekly contribution rate no longer adds up to the target in time
- A windfall (birthday cash, M-Pesa from a relative) means the child will hit the goal early and you want to raise the bar
If the goal itself is no longer relevant — say, your child changed their mind entirely — you’re better off archiving it and creating a new savings goal from scratch so the history stays clean.
Steps to edit a savings goal
-
Open the goal directly. The fastest path is the goal’s direct link:
https://kiddy.cash/family/kiddy/account/goal/:goal_idReplace:goal_idwith the actual ID shown in your Family dashboard. You can also navigate there via Family → [Child’s name] → Savings Goals → [Goal name]. -
Tap the edit icon. On the goal detail screen, look for the pencil icon in the top-right corner. This opens the goal editor without affecting any contributions already saved.
-
Update the target amount. Enter the new KES figure. KiddyCash will immediately recalculate the remaining amount needed based on what’s already been saved — you’ll see this reflected in the progress bar preview before you confirm.
-
Adjust the target date. Use the date picker to move the deadline. As you change the date, the app shows you the implied weekly or monthly contribution needed to hit the new target on time. This is the number worth pausing on — if it’s higher than the child’s current allowance, you’ll need to either extend the date further or plan for manual top-ups.
-
Edit the goal name or image (optional). Small changes like renaming “New phone” to “Samsung A15” or swapping the cover image can re-energise a child’s focus — don’t underestimate this.
-
Save. Tap Save changes. The updated goal is live immediately. KiddyCash does not retroactively change past contributions or notifications that have already fired.
A note on contribution rules
Editing a goal does not automatically update any linked contribution rules or allowance schedules. If you’ve set up an automatic transfer from the child’s wallet toward this goal, review that rule separately under Allowances & Rules to make sure the cadence still makes sense against the new target.
This is also a good moment to step back and look at the family picture. Goals compete with spending and other saving priorities, and if you’re finding that targets keep slipping, the issue is often upstream — in how the family budget is structured. Understanding why the family budget is your most powerful financial teaching tool can reframe how you set goals in the first place, and running a simple family budget your kids can see and learn from gives a practical approach you can put in place alongside KiddyCash.
